Setting Intentions Any Day of the Year

Posted on: December 29th, 2016
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

“New year, new you.”

I can’t stand this phrase. Sure, it sounds catchy, but what’s wrong with the old me? What’s wrong with who I am now? To me, “new year, new you” sounds as if we need to dismiss our entire being. How is that healthy? Why should we wait for a holiday when it comes to setting intentions?

New Year Resolutions List for Setting Intentions

SCREW THE CALENDAR

Does your list of New Year’s resolutions look like the picture above? That may not be a bad thing.

Goals are personal. According to Forbes Magazine, less than 10% of New Year’s resolutions are achieved. Setting intentions can be a fun tradition, but they mainly fail due to a heightened level of pressure and impulsive decisions. How do we change that number? Setting intentions can be done any day of the year. Maybe that’s why every year I hear more people say, “My New Year’s resolution is to not make resolutions.”

(It’s still considered healthy to use a calendar to measure your progress, whatever keeps you motivated.)

RESPECT THE PROCESS

Sometimes stuff comes up, and life feels interrupted. Sometimes becomes all the time. We get thrown off track, and that intention of where we were headed suddenly feels out of reach. Then what? It’s always something.

We need to learn to face ourselves with a level of love and respect at all times. Learn to love unconditionally (ourselves and others), and find respect for the journey of personal growth. Many elements of personal growth are not something we can set a timeline for.

When you are ready to make a change you will. Image of pink glowing clouds and dark clouds in sky.

Sunset, Austin, Texas

Sometimes we want a change for others more than they want it for themselves. To ensure our intentions are healthy and effective, asking questions can help us decide where to start.

Questions to ask yourself when SETTING INTENTIONS

So whether or not you are making resolutions, I hope you have a healthy and prosperous 2017. When the time is right for you, the list below may be used as a tool to pin point your intentions and goals. Maybe this is cheesy, but the good ‘ol’  5 W’s come into play here.

*Note: This is in no way a complete list.  Add your own questions to help set yourself or someone else up for success!

  • What did you learn about yourself when something didn’t work out in the past?
  • What doesn’t work for you?

  • What do you want to experience?
  • What is something you have never done before?
  • What are you afraid of?
  • What inspires you?

  • Where is the space you feel most comfortable?
  • Where do you feel least comfortable?
  • Where are you most productive?
  • Where do you see yourself in the future?
  • Where do find your inspiration?
  • Where do you make compromises?
  • Where do you feel stuck?
  • Where were you during your happiest memories?

WHEN

  • When will you begin?
  • When does your dream feel like it has come to a stop?
  • When are you making it happen?
  • When do you feel distracted?
  • When do you feel focused?

WHY

  • Why is this intention or goal important to you?

yoga retreat costa rica

Sanctuary Yoga is happy to announce our first international yoga retreat in Playa Potrero, Costa Rica!

Grow with the Flow is a 7-day intensive yoga retreat in the paradise of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. This region of Costa Rica is known to be one of the “Blue Zones,” one of the places on the planet that people are said to be the happiest and live longer than anywhere else. Over the 7 days, we will retreat into ourselves. We will explore what it means to cultivate ultimate peace, happiness, and tranquility within one’s self. Through the Grow with the Flow yoga retreat we will join together in community to explore ourselves and the greater world at large.

Why do I need to go to Costa Rica to do this? Well, besides it being one of the most beautiful and tranquil places on earth, at Sanctuary we believe that taking ourselves out of our comfort zone is the fastest way to growth. This experience will provide you with an opportunity to step out of your normal day-to-day, to change your external environment just enough to look inward.

What does this retreat include? This retreat includes:

beautiful accommodations at Colores Del Pacifico resort. You can choose to share a room with someone else or stay in a single room for a bit more money (see pricing options for retreat below).

-most meals are provides (there will be a handful of meals out in the town that you will need to cover at your own expense but 17 of the 21 meals are provided).

-all in country transportation

-Outdoor adventures (hiking, snorkeling, bike riding, paddle boarding)

-Opportunities to vision and reflect (daily group circles, vision boarding, intention setting activities)

-2X a day yoga and workshops

-Cultural exploration (live music with locals, exploration of a local labyrinth, day excursion to a nearby town)

-1 massage

-Service project with a local community

The intention of this experience is to provide a deep breath from the fast pace of every day life, to provide an experience that fosters internal growth, compassion, and centeredness in order to create better relationships, community and a better world.

Is this retreat for me? Are you finding yourself saying ‘YES’ to any of the below?

  • I am interested in setting intention for the new year
  • I am looking to discover my own potential
  • I am curious about self inquiry and self empowerment
  • I am interested in in exploring myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually

Let’s Get Real | Yoga for Connection

Posted on: March 30th, 2016
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Connection starts with you. You can be a teacher. You can be a friend. Your stories can transform, heal, comfort and help others grow. Your story matters. Share your story and connect to others by becoming a Yogi Blogger.

Sanctuary Yoga is about community. Authenticity builds connection. In order to make yoga more accessible, we offer many ways to get involved, including blogging for unlimited yoga. This yoga trade program has allowed many individuals to deepen their practice by sharing their story, whether by exploring something they learned in class or within their own personal practice. This aspect of our studio not only builds community but cultivates a culture of authenticity that shows people that it’s okay to be vulnerable and real. Everyone has a different yoga practice because everyone has a different body and life experience.

Why share my story?

In our culture, we typically rush to and from yoga class without saying a word to anyone in the studio. Talking about our experiences in class seems to go against the very practice we’ve been taught. Yoga is about drawing inward. What happens in yoga class stays in yoga class. The studio is a safe space for you to find stillness and connect with yourself. Keep in mind everyone else is probably there for some of the same reasons you are. Everyone wants to be healthy, change, grow, and improve. Everyone has deep hurts and hangups.

Many of you have probably watched the TED Talk of Brene Brown speaking about vulnerability. If you have not, we encourage you to do so. Brene shows us that vulnerability encourages connection. Sometimes we need to move past the screen and seek out quality time for deep conversation. We find ourselves surrounded by many connections, but still feel isolated and alone. The willingness to share who we are, our struggles past and present, enables us to connect with others who share our experiences and sentiments. It transcends the imaginary walls we’ve built around ourselves to keep everything looking neat, tidy, pretty.

Sharing your experience is powerful because it not only encourages connection, but it can be healing and comforting to you and others. As a yoga studio, we strive to hold a space for our students to be who they are, wherever they are at in their life. We invite you to sit with the emotions or experiences that are on your heart and mind and use your breath and movement to be present as we move through the class. We challenge you to look at the places where you need to let go and free yourself to feel, breathe, and move. We want you to feel safe to just be you.

“As a result of authenticity, they were willing to let go of who they thought they should be in order to be who they were… You have to absolutely do that for connection.”

–Brene Brown

STOP, RECALIBRATE AND LISTEN: New Moon Workshop and Ceremony

Posted on: October 5th, 2015
Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Truth: I made C’s in all my science classes. I don’t know why but I just didn’t care to know how everything worked. Fast forward many years and I am finding myself greatly influenced by science and a certain Celestial body; the Moon.According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%. So it’s no joke that the gravitational forces of the Moon have a great effect not just not our planet’s bodies of water (the oceans) but also on OUR bodies of water!

Like the Moon pulls in the tide, she stirs your energy.  With her full, glowing light, you feel alive and breathless and creative.  With her dark, empty nights, you feel introspective and alone.  She feeds you every day with her energy and her love.  She controls your cycles and your rhythm.  She IS you.

The Lunar Effect is a great example.  This is the “belief that there is correlation between specific stages of the Earth’s lunar cycle and behavior in animals (including humans), that cannot simply be explained by variation in light levels.” You have probably heard sayings like “the crazies will come out on the Full Moon” or you may be aware that your own energy or anxiety levels increase during a Full Moon.  While many of notice this effect, a more subtle change comes about in us during a New Moon.

When the Moon is at it’s darkest point in its orbit, it’s in the New Moon phase.  During this time, our introspective nature takes precedence over our controlled thought patterns. Our shadow selves are at the forefront and, although subtle, there can be a noticeable differences in our levels of creativity and moodiness.  Because this New Moon phase is considered the beginning of the Moon’s Cycle (Day 1), it’s a potent time to set intentions for the month ahead. This can be done through meditation, journaling or joining in ceremony with others.

The New Moon is a time to re-calibrate our Selves and regain our balance. Setting intentions for this moment, next month or the future is such a giant step on the path of self-care.  Join us this Saturday, from 4-6pm, for a workshop
celebration of this special Lunar Phase through yoga, meditation and ceremony with others! Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 12.37.32 PM
